Exhibition Overview
WE SEE THEM EVERYDAY – the banal and innocuous road signs that direct our flow as we navigate where we want to go. The shapes, colours, and the bold directives have become embedded in a system of symbols we have come to easily recognise and understand. This new exhibition, Landmarks by Darwin artist Pennyrose Wiggins, takes us on a journey traversing the Top End landscape, with a play on the language and symbology of road signs, alternate meanings and quirks in the landscape.
As a follow-on from her 2017 exhibition Neighborhoods, Pennyrose uses found objects to depict her unique interpretation of the landscape. Fine brushwork and detail, overlay the bold graphics of original road signs, to create a new meaning, populated with images that have become landmarks in a Top End narrative - elevated houses, the tropical palms and dry outback, the big sky, puffed up build-up clouds, and ever quirky antics of the local bird life.
