This month we are presenting the evocative and highly distinguishable works from Tjala Arts in the APY Lands. Featuring well known favourites such as Wawiriya Burton and Barbara Moore, this show presents strong examples of their defining styles and stories.
From the shimmering work of Wawiriya Burton as she defines Ngayuku ngura – My Country, the Mitakiki Women’s Collaborative and Stanley Douglas’ depictions of the Seven Sisters Tjukurpa, to the bold graphic palette of Barbara Moore. A striking lacework-like patterning of white on red is used by Sammy Lyons to define his Wanampi Tjukurpa – Mythical Rainbow Snake creation story.
This show also includes three works on paper by reknown elder Iluwanti Ken, featuring her idiosyncratic use of line and wash to depict the intensity of the Walawulu ngunytju kukaku ananyi (Mother eagles going hunting) story.
