At Art Sydney 2008, Outstation will exhibit a range of quality works from Indigenous artists, all of whom are members of community co-operatives or art centres based in Aboriginal communities across WA and the NT. Art Sydney will take place from 23 - 26 October 2008 at the Royal Hall of Industries, Moore Park.

Artists represented include: Judy Napangati Watson (Warlukurlangu Artisits - Yuendumu), Lucy Loomoo (Warlayirti Artists - Balgo), Miriam Baadjo (warlayirti Artists - Balgo), Shorty Jangala Robertson (Warlukurlangu Artists - Yuendumu), Mabel Juli (Warmun Arts - Turkey Creek), Manupa Butler (Kayili Arts - Patjarr), Conrad Tipungwuti (Jilamara Arts and Crafts - Tiwi Is).

Art Singapore 2008

Outstation travelled to singapore recently to experience the 2008 Art Singapore and the Singapore Biennale. While there were some works of interest at the Biennale, the work tended to be let down by the exhibition space.

Art Singapore 2008, gave a fascinating view of the state of the arts in the South east asian region and beyond. On the first day of the fair, the Singapore economy went into recession and this gave the fair a dramatic back drop. The world economy was the talk across the city and there is no doubt that the nervousness surrounding the recent turmoil had art buyers thinking before making a purchase. Having said this there were reports of some exhibiting galleries making significant sales during the the fair.

New Works from Aboriginal art centres across WA and the NT

From Kayili Artists, in the Western Australian desert country, to Jilamara Arts and Crafts on the Tiwi Islands. From Mangkaja Arts in Fitzroy Crossing, to Buku-Larrnggay Mulka, at Yirrikarla in Arnhem Land. This survey at Outstation show cases the exciting new work of many talented artists from the Top End, Kimberley and Desert country. The quality of art being produced is a testament to the hard work being done by community art centres.

Kayili Artists

Kayili Artists, operate from the Patjarr Community, 240 kilometres north of Warburton, in the Gibson Desert WA . The art centre was set up as a community owned and managed enterprise, to generate income and provide resources to the artists of Patjarr.

Artsists include: Manupa Butler, Pulpurru Davies

Warlayirti Artists

Warlayirti Artists, established in 1987, represents more than 350 artists across three communities, in the Kutjungka region of northeast Western Australia. Warlayirti Artists are famous for their works of acrylic on canvas, often depicting their ancestral country, their Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) and personal stories. Along with their better known artists (including: Elizabeth Nyumi, Helicopter Tjungurrayi, Boxer Milner and Eubena Nampitjin, to name a few), Warlayirti Artists maintain a strong focus on developing younger and emerging artists.

Ngaruwanajirri Inc.

Meaning ‘helping one another’, Ngaruwanajirri was established in 1994 to provide a focus and source of independent income for people a Nguiu on Bathurst Island, one of the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory. Ngaruwanajirri artists create works usings local ochres and natural pigments on paper, canvas and carvings.

Milingimbi Art and Culture

Situated approximately 400 km east of Darwin, Northern Territory, Milingimbi is an island community just off the coast of Arnhem Land. A number of different clan groups exist amongst the population of around 1,000 that call Milingimbi and the surrounding outstations, home. Many items made by the artists of Milingimbi (which include weavings and bark paintings) are still used for practical and, most importantly, ceremonial purposes.

Warmun Art Centre

Established in 1998 by artists of the Warmun (Turkey Creek) community. The Warmun Art Centre is wholly owned and managed by the Warmun artist group, with 100% of income from artwork sales being returned back to the community. Each canvas is painted using hand collected ochres and natural pigments found in the Kimberley.

Ngurratjuta Iltja Ntjarra

Ngurratjuta Iltja Ntjarra was established in 2003 to provide a place for Western Arrarnte Artists to meet, paint, learn new techniques and share ideas. Artworks are created in a variety of styles, from landscape watercolours to fine dot work and bold contemporary paintings. The Ngurratjuta Art Centre currently supports over 400 artists with a focus on the famous ”Hermannsburg School” of watercolourists who coninue to paint in the tradition of their grandfather, Albert Namatjira.

Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association

Jilamara Arts & Crafts Association, established in 1989, is an indigenous owned art centre located at Milikapiti on Melville Island, north of Darwin. The artists of Jilamara are famous for their carvings and ochres on paper and canvas.
