Outstation Newsletter 2 Upcoming Exhibitions Emerging and Re-emerging - 3rd April to 28th April Mangkaja Arts and Outstation are proud to present 'Emerging and Re-emerging' (a survey show) which will be opening on the 3rd April at 6pm. Please come along to the opening. This exhibition features works by Greg Peterson, Eva Nargoodah, Sonia Kurrara and Andrea Pindan, exciting new artists from Mangkaja Arts. In addition the show will feature work by more established artists who have recently experienced a resurgence in popularity. Mangkaja Arts is based in Fitzroy Crossing, which is a four hour drive east of Broome in Western Australia. It has been in operation for over fifteen years. Mangkaja’s artists come from four main language groups. Bunuba and Gooniyandi are from the Fitzroy River area while the Wangkajunga and Walmajarri groups are from the south of the Great Sandy Desert. The meeting of desert and river cultures represented at Mangkaja has lead to an exceptionally diverse range of artwork being produced. Mangkaja Artists are well known for their contemporary, colourful works on canvas and paper and limited edition prints that depict their country, culture and diverse stories. Mangkaja is a Walmajarri word meaning wet weather shelter. www.outstation.com.au/emerging-and-re-emerging/ Painting Above: Claude Carter, Boolga (Old Man), 120x90cm, acrylic on canvas, 2008 New Art Work Arriving at Outstation Outstation has been busy in March with bush trips to Art Centres in the Ngaanyatjarra, Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjarra Lands (NPY) and the the Western Desert region. The exhibition featured whimsical dyed textile soft sculptures, and dry point etchings from artists at the Yarrenty-Arltere Learning Centre at the Larapinta Town Camp in Alice Springs. The gallery was very busy for the exhibition opening with lots of people who came especially for the event, as well as some curious onlookers from the Saturday Parap markets! The exhibition has received lots of positive feedback from people visiting the gallery. It was the inaugural exhibition for these artists, and we wish them the best of luck for the future.
If you didn't get the chance to see the exhibition there are still some fantastic prints and pieces left that haven't been sold, so its not too late if you want to purchase something. You can also view some of the pieces from the exhibition on the website at www.outstation.com.au/bush-dolls/
Coming up.... The new website is due to be launched shortly, so we will let you know when this happens. Outstation is planning more exhibitions with Art Centres in the coming months including Warlayirti Artists from Balgo and an exhibition of mens work from Warakurna Artists in Western Australia. |
