Arnhem Land
Maningrida Arts and Culture
Situated at the mouth of the Liverpool River in northern Arnhem Land, Maningrida Arts & Culture supports artists from the main township and many surrounding homelands. Established in 1973, it is one the longest running art centres. It currently operates under the auspices of Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation.
Bridging a diverse community of more then 20 language groups, the art from this region is marked by these locales: the fine, tight raark of the inland Kuninjku to the thicker, looser, saltwater designs of Burrara. Many artists are interdisciplinary, working in bark painting, fibre weaving, woodcarving and printmaking.
Works in fibre have always been strong from this region, known for their aesthetic use of bush dyes and conical fish traps. Artists from Maningrida have been highly sought after in public and private collections. They have been consistently represented in the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards, having fostered the artistic careers of John Mawurndjul, Samuel Namunjda, Lena Yarinkurra, Bob Burruwal, Kay Lindjuwanga and Deborah Wurrkidj to name just a few.
