Outstation Gallery and Warlukurlangu Artists are proud to present Nyirrpi, a survey show of recent works from the Nyirrpi community. The Nyirrpi community is located 160km south-west of Yuendumu. The community has never had an art centre or consistent art facilitation. When several longstanding members of Warlukurlangu Artists moved from Yuendumu to Nyirrpi in early 2005, they asked that Warlukurlangu provide them with support there. Since that time, staff from Warlukurlangu have been making regular trips to Nyirrpi to support these artists. The exhibition features works from a range of new and established artists.
Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation of Yuendumu was incorporated in 1986. Warlukurlangu is a not for profit organisation that has more than 600 members, all of whom are Indigenous artists. It is directed by an executive committee of eight men and eight women representing all the ‘skin groups’. Warlukurlangu means “belonging to fire” in Warlpiri, and is named after a Fire Dreaming west of Yuendumu. Owned and governed by its more than 600 members, Warlukurlangu art centre is famous for its gloriously colourful acrylic paintings.
