Tobias Richardson – Travel Buildings (if you want it) etc
Where
Outstation Gallery8 Parap Place
Parap, 0820
Darwin, Northern Territory
A densely installed drawing exhibition of buildings visited on the artist’s journeys over recent years: to and from Darwin, Hill End, Ethiopia, Jogjakarta, Mali, Paris, New York, Philadelphia, Blue Mountains, San Francisco and Sydney!
I first met Tobias 14 years ago. We were both living and working in Maningrida and spent three years in that community as colleagues and next door neighbours. While installing the exhibition this week we have reminisced about the people we met and the events that happened – some tragic, some very comical, some beautiful and some just plain weird. We both formed many close relationships with people while living there – a result of living in such a small community and our shared experiences.
As much as this exhibition is autobiographical – a glimpse into Tobias’ world and the places he has visited around the globe – it encourages us to think about the places we have all travelled to and the people we have met during our own adventures.
