TJUNGU – COMING HOME is the expression of country by Tjarlirli Artists of the Western Desert.
Key artists Nyarapayi Giles, Bob Gibson and Katjarra Butler have previously shown with Outstation and the Salon des Refuses and continue to express their stories through their individual mark making. Nyarapayi Giles was a finalist in the 2017 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA) and her entry is included in this exhibition. We are also pleased to welcome the first major showing of works by Tjukupati James.
RESPECTED ELDER Nyarapayi Giles is well known for her vibrant paintings of the Warmurrungu (emu) tjukurrpa using both line and dot work. In a departure from this style she depicts the Purrungu (Python Story) as a dynamic and writhing line in a tonal palette.
Refreshingly raw and modern abstraction is seen in the work of Bob Gibson and Katjarra Butler. The Patjantja works by Bob Gibson are marked by very bold and strong singular and minimal strokes while Katjarra Butler uses a slightly more painterly approach and equally striking in intensity.
The first major showing of works by Tjukupati James includes a series of painterly works where she uses both a vibrant colourful palette and also muted pale tones to great effect. Her painting Alpi, is the place of her birth south of the Docker River.
This exhibition is brought to you by Outstation, in collaboration with the following art centres:
