Light through glass
This work is from the first ever exhibition made by Buku-Ḻarrŋgay Mulka Centre featuring solely glass. An earlier exhibition at Annandale Galleries, FOUND, in 2013, featured a handful of glass and perspex pieces amongst the works made with recycled material. This was the only other exhibition of recycled work ever held. The materials are all found or retrieved glass or perspex from the tip or around the house of the artist, painted with earth pigments.
Giḻatj features the work of four Yirrkala artists: Barayuwa Munuŋgurr, Djirrirra Wunungmurra, Malaluba Gumana and Wukun Wanambi. They have used the same stories and motifs familiar in their bark paintings and Larrakitj (hollow log coffins) onto glass, adding light-filled dimension to the intricate and fine work of the Yirrkala hand.
