For our final show of the year, it is Outstation’s great pleasure to bring you the urban landscapes of Pennyrose Wiggins.
Renowned for her incredible paintings on everything from street signs to car bonnets – ‘A Sign of the Times’ treats us to works that incorporate the original metal messages into the art. Whether it is dangerous plovers, pee wees and magpies painted across a sign warning you to wear protective eyewear, or a stop sign used as the backdrop to high-vis figures busy fracking, each piece speaks of the beauty and threats of our Territory life.
While sounding the alarm about development and climate change, many of Wiggin’s works also celebrate the tenacity of its creatures.
As she says : “At first glance you wouldn’t think these are places you could find any form of nature or wildlife. I have seen Jabirus perched on Telstra Towers, Torresian Imperial Pigeons paired on powerlines, Goshawks preying on doves in a carpark, sand palm shadows dancing on yellow tin sheds and build-up clouds forming above.”
And even her wonderful oil paintings on board, where the urban retreats slightly and we see red-collared lorikeets feasting on eucalypts or a red-tailed black cockatoo dining on a curly black wattle pod, there seems to be an underlying message of glorious survival against the odds.
