Warakurna Artists , The Western Desert

Nestled under the Rawlinson Ranges in the Gibson Desert, lies the Warakurna township in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands of Western Australia. Opened in 2005 as a fully Aboriginal owned and governed art centre, it provides artists in the area with a vibrant working place to share stories and pass on cultural knowledge.

In 2011 Outstation presented the History Paintings exhibition, bought by private collectors and donated to the National Museum of Australia. Marked by a naive, narrative style of painting, the show documented a variety of experiences and events in subjects such as “That Army plane that came to Warbuton” by Eunice Yunurupa Porter, and “Warbuton Mission: Leaving Time” by Judith Yinyika Chambers and the unforgettable story of Robyn Davidson, “Camel Lady” by Jean Burke.
