Mangkaja Arts

Mangkaja Arts Resource Agency Aboriginal Corporation is based in Fitzroy Crossing, which is a four hour drive east Broome in Western Australia. It has been in operation for over fifteen years. Mangkaja’s artists come from four main language groups – Bunuba and Gooniyandi are from areas surrounding parts of the Fitzroy River while the Wangkajunga and Walmajarri groups, are from the south of the Great Sandy Desert. Mangkaja is a Walmajarri word meaning wet weather shelter. The Art Centre was established to relieve poverty, helplessness, distress, suffering and cultural loss.

The meeting of desert and river cultures represented at Mangkaja has lead to an exceptionally diverse range of artwork being produced at the art centre. Mangkaja Artists are well known for their contemporary, colourful works on canvas and paper and limited edition prints that depict their country, culture and diverse stories.
